The Evil Within 2 is officially live and definitely scarier than the first game. As Sebastian's quest to save his daughter takes some truly gruesome turns, with nightmarish characters around every turn, the next phase of his journey is not for the faint of heart. Luckily, there are a few different routes players can take when taking on this epic feat, so here's the breakdown of the three available difficulty settings and what they change - plus how to unlock the fourth secret setting at the end of the game.
To make it easy, these are all of the settings available for The Evil Within 2, with three of them being available at the start:
How To Unlock Akumu Model
Because players can't scale up the difficulty once the game commences, they can only scale down, here is the breakdown of what changes come with each setting to get the most out of your first playthrough.
There's no shame in going casual - this mode is there for people wanting to explore the story aspect of Sebastian's trial. For those looking for a more narrative focus versus hordes of enemies, this mode is the one to choose. There are tons of items around and enemies are still there but much easier to kill. For those that may not have a gun affinity in-game, there is also aim assist available as well as additional melee boosts right from the start.
There is an ability that can be unlocked later on in the other modes, but with casual the 'Bottle Break' is available right from the start. This allows players to be able to break free of the enemy's hold if a bottle is present within the inventory.
Survival is a more balanced play experience. Easy enough to still be an enjoyable story experience, but with enough challenge to make it game-worthy. This mode brings with it fewer resources and slightly more difficulty when it comes to taking out the many nightmarish creatures during The Evil Within 2. The developers encourage players that choose this route to take a 'slow and steady' approach because resources are limited and need to be properly allocated throughout the game.
This mode also houses the aim assist that is available for casual players, but it is not necessary in order to progress through the game.
This mode is definitely for the more experienced. As the name suggests, it is much more difficult than the previous modes. In the first Evil Within, players had to first beat the game before unlocking the mode - for the sequel, Nightmare is available right out of the gate. Because why not?
Though this is not an impossible mode, it is definitely a challenge. Resources are incredibly rare, including ammo. Because of this, the crafting in game is no longer an option - it's a necessity. The enemies are tougher to kill, larger in number, and aim assist no longer accessible. This mode is only recommended for those that are very experienced with this type of game, or have already played through the Nightmare mode of the first one.
In order to take advantage of the Classic Mode, players must first have completed the entire game all the way through. The Classic Mode can be compared to Nightmare, but does offer additional challenges for players to experience in order to make it to the end once more. For starters, that handy autosave? Gone. Not only that, but players will only have seven saves for the whole game so you have to make them count. No randomly saving at every corner: 7 saves only.
Another thing? Don't expect to upgrade Sebby or his weapons - what you get is what you get. This is only for the truly masochistic players looking for the ultimate challenge to achieve 100% completion and show off what a beast they are.
The Evil Within 2 is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
The Evil Within 2 Trophy Roadmap
IntroductionHow To Unlock Akumu Mode 1
Welcome to The Evil Within 2 Trophy Guide! Just like the first game this platinum is not for the faint-hearted. Akumu difficulty returns under the disguise of “Classic Mode”. You only have 7 manual saves for the entire game and cannot buy weapon upgrades. Unlike the first game, this one features many open world sections. You can completely bypass enemies and sneak / run past them. So it’s a bit easier than the first game. Classic difficulty is unlocked by beating the game for the first time (any difficulty, casual will do). All of the trophies are missable except for story trophies. There are lots of collectible types, 115 collectibles plus 7 coffee makers in safehouses and you must find all weapons. After beating the game for the first time, you unlock New Game+. Your collectibles and purchased weapon upgrades / skills carry over into New Game+. This way you can farm the remaining upgrades for their related trophies. However, you cannot transfer your equipment to Classic Mode. It’ll be the same difficulty you selected at the start of the first playthrough.
Step 1: Beat Story on Nightmare Difficulty, Get All Collectibles & Weapons, Chapter Specific Trophies / Combat Trophies
You should start on Nightmare (hard difficulty). The reason being that one weapon, the “brass knuckles” is only rewarded by beating the game on Nightmare or Classic difficulty (“Powerhouse” trophy). You cannot earn this trophy on lower difficulties. It’s also good training for Classic Mode to get a feel for ammo conservation.
All the trophies in the game are missable, except for the automatic story unlocks. You will have to do multiple playthroughs anyway so it’s not too bad if you miss something here. Your main focus should be the collectibles and finding all weapons. If you miss any you can pick them up in New Game+. All your collectible progress, equipment and weapon upgrades / skills carry over.
The most missable trophies that take place over multiple chapters are:
There is no chapter select in this game! If you miss them you have to do it in New Game+ or make a manual save from time to time and reload it.
Follow these two guides for the weapon locations & collectibles:
Step 2: New Game+, Upgrade All Weapons and Buy all Skills
After the first playthrough you unlock New Game+. All your collectibles, gear, and upgrades carry over into New Game Plus. You will receive all the carried-over upgrades and items at a certain point in chapter 2. Green Gel and Weapon Parts are also more plentiful in New Game Plus so it’s easier to unlock upgrades. Kill all enemies and search all areas carefully to get enough upgrade parts. You must fully upgrade all your weapons and buy all skills for the trophies “Stick it in My Veins” & “They Never Even Stood A Chance”.
You may select any difficulty equal to or lower than the original difficulty completed. If the second playthrough isn’t enough to get all upgrades, you can do a third run in New Game++.
Step 3: Classic Mode Difficulty (Akumu)
Akumu difficulty from the first game returns under the disguise of “Classic Mode”. You only have 7 manual saves for the entire game and cannot buy upgrades. Unlike the first game, this one features many open world sections. You can completely bypass enemies and sneak / run past them. So it’s a bit easier than the first game. There are also fewer boss fights. Classic difficulty is unlocked by beating the game for the first time (any difficulty).
Ammo conservation is the biggest challenge. Try to do sneak kills wherever possible. In open world sections, sneak-kill enemies for possible drops and loot everything carefully. Make one manual save every few chapters. There are 17 chapters total, so one save every 2-3 chapters is okay. Make the saves before difficult sections or boss fights.
